Top 10 Best Simpsons Episodes Ever?

I ran across this article in Vanity Fair (after reading the article Big BM recommended on Les Elephants) in which a Vanity Fair Editor and other staff writers rated the Top 10 Simpsons episodes of all time. In my humble opinion, as a life long fan, they got it all kinds of wrong . Who cares if the editor who put it together wrote a stupid book on the Simpsons. They are stupid. I mean the episode when the Bush's move in across the street? That one suck-diddley-ucked Flanders. They got maybe 3 or 4 right, maybe.

So, going along with the cash flow coverage of all things Simpson (I hear there is a movie or something) I thought the contributors and readers of this blog could put forth their ideas on the Top 10 Simpsons of all time.

In order to be manageable-I ain't so good at cipherin'-if you could limit your nominations to your top 3-5 episodes, we can assemble the full potential of hipster-nerd power that is IDYFT and its readership and togehter compile a list worthy of being a Simpsons Top 10.
UPDATE: As commenter extraordinaire lbutler points out, the kindly folks at DeadOn are currently in the midst of their Top 20. So why work to create our own list, when we can slag someone else's? We will be comparing the Top 10 of DeadOn against the Top 10 of Vanity Fair. If I can figure out how to do it, we will even allow polls for you, somewhat faithful reader to vote on who picked the better episode. Should be fun, maybe.

Without a doubt, the funniest Simpsons of all time is the one when Homer goes into space. Not only is the animation some of the best work the series has ever seen (witness Homer eating potato chips in 0 g), but the the jokes just keep a-poppin. An equally valuable exercise would be the top 10 jokes from that episode.

Nominations include "In a way, you're both winners. But, in a much more realistic way, Barney is the winner" leading to Homer's "Wait a minute ... Statue of Liberty ... that was our planet!" to "You fool! Now we may never know if ants can be trained to sort tiny screws in space!" to the inanimate carbon rod and beyond.

Having seen this episode when it aired as well as subsequent syndicated reruns, I feel ... well, not pride, but less shame.

that's stupid. Clearly the best joke from that episode is the monkey who came back from space super intelligent, but still likes to roller skate. Or possibly Kent's monologue on the usefullness of the media to our new Ant Overlords.

However, on the larger point, that is absolutely my #1 episode of all time, as well.

To the aforementioned episodes, I would add King Size Homer and the one where the Germans buy the nuclear power plant.

I might not be done.

Homer in space, number 1. I can't believe it wasn't on the list, but it's all just a popularity contest with that damn inanimate carbon rod.

The John Waters episode. Zzzzap.

Monorail. C'mon.

I call the big one, "Bitey." "Deep Space Homer" is near the top for me too, but this one is clearly in the Pantheon as well.

Monorail and Deep Space nearly equal, each having its own social footprint on my life.

I also love Mr. Plow and Homer Loses his Religion.

Shit, then there's Stonecutters and so many more.

The astronaut episode? That's okay I guess if you think Tang jokes, inatimate carbon rods, and different kinds of mathematicians are funny...

But I'd like to suggest three for the list: 1) Homer and Bart abusing the Bigger Brothers ("Homer Simpson...? The drunken gambler? Yes, and who might you be?); 2) The Pin Pals episode ("Boy that team sure did suck last night... MAN did they suck. They were the suckiest bunch of sucks that ever sucked. Uh-oh, I gotta go, my damn wiener kids are listening.); 3) Homer works for Mr. Scorpio ("I think owning the Denver Broncos is pretty great! Aw Marge... you just don't understand football.).

Strong entries all, gents. Homer in Space was always my favorite followed by Pin Pals ("oooh... I lost a fingertip, well that's leprosy for you"). Now that I'm all old, however, I find myself drawn most strongly to Lisa the Iconoclast. Cromulent, embiggens, "less chat more hat!"?

Honorable mentions, the Twisted World of Marge Simpson ("I saw you trying to cram one more snack into America's already bloated snackhole...), the hockey episode ("competitive violence, that's why you're here!"), Last Exit to Springfield ("Why must you turn my office into a house of LIES?"), and Bart After Dark ("I have misplaced my pants").

Oh. and probably alot more that I forgot.

I think the top ten list could be the comprised solely from the fourth and fifth seasons.

"It choose choose choose me, and there's a picture of a train on it."

There are mountains of great episodes to mow through. No one has yet mentioned the brilliant Itchy & Scratchy Land ("When you get to hell, tell them Itchy sent you!").

What about the first episode involving psychedelia -- all I remember is that Lisa drank the water in the "Small World" ride and ends up as the lizard queen, able to do anything. I don't remember the rest of the episode because I was inhaling some sort of plant toxin through a bong named Jody.

How about after this, we pick our top ten "Price is Right" episodes?

Homer loves Flanders has just got great moment after great moment.... "You're name shall be.. Stitchface"... I have two amazing episodes to metion, and if you don't think they belong, you are crazy and must go watch them again. I think the Homer phobia episode is one of the greatest and it includes such memorable scenes as homer taking bart to a gay steel mill and the great line: Homer"i like my beer cold, my tv loud, and my homosexuals Fa-laming"

Oh, and of course my personal favourite, the lemon tree episode where shelbyville steals springfield's lemon tree. Favourite line given by shelbyville's old man telling the story of the lemon tree to shelbyville kids "so we banished the lemon tree back to springfield... cuz it was haunted"

Viva Ned Flanders! It single handedly made homer from funny to Sheer Greatness. Fear & Loathing reference, elvis, drunk ned, vegas wives, & such but the best part was when ned turns around wondering about randomness and homer's spit roasting a chicken over a nuclear chimney. Amazing!
